Library Mission

The Library's mission extends a philosophy of ‘Open’ through teaching, conversation, and community.

The Library accomplishes this by:

  • teaching and promoting information literacy
  • collecting and providing access to relevant and diverse academic resources
  • providing a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff
  • demonstrating through all library services and resources an openness to and ability to engage with divergent perspectives
  • employing a range of open information practices, including OER, open licensing, and open pedagogy

Supporting Black Lives Matter

The following excerpt is from the TCC website, linked below:

The Board of Trustees of Tacoma Community College reaffirms our commitment to eliminating systemic racism, and to standing with Black students, faculty, staff, and the Black community. Specifically, we commit to the following actions:

  • Actively listen to Black students, faculty, and staff
  • Take action to address their concerns and recommendations
  • Review systems, policies, and procedures to root out systemic barriers and biases
  • Provide professional development that will increase cultural competence and eliminate racism, bias and other forms of discrimination
  • Hire racially diverse faculty and staff
  • As a governing board, actively monitor progress

Supporting Asian and Pacific Islander Students, Staff & Faculty

More information on anti-racism and anti-hate can be found in those related tabs in this guide. However, in light of the recent acts of hate towards the APPI population, the library has created a guide of resources and information to help.

Supporting our LGBTQIA Population at TCC

Linked below you will find TCC's statement of support for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. The guide linked below will also provide resources for an array of needs such as the following:

  • Safe Zone Training
  • Gender Inclusive locations on campus
  • Additional on-campus support & programs

You will find additional information to support the LGBTQ+ population, namely within the higher education environment within the tabs of this guide. However, the guide linked below has been created by TCC librarians to help support the LGBTQ+ population and allies. There you will find a list of resources both online, and in TCC's electronic and print collections. Suggestions for local resources or items to be added to the library's collection are always welcomed!

  1. We are so fortunate that TCC is located on the ancestral territory of First Nations peoples. The Puyallup tribe, a member of the Coast Salish tribal peoples have called this area home since time immemorial. In 1854, the Medicine Creek Treaty forcibly removed them from their lands and onto the Puyallup reservation.
  2. The state of Washington has the 7th largest Native American population in the U.S. with 29 federally recognized tribes represented, as well as several unrecognized tribes. We recognize that the privilege of our campus being on the land on which we now stand comes at great cost to the Coast Salish peoples.
  3. We gather here knowing that our presence is part of an ongoing invasion and that these lands were and continue to be forcibly and unlawfully taken from their original indigenous inhabitants. We acknowledge that these injustices are true here and also for indigenous communities around the globe.
