Identify your search words

Make a list of search words.
To begin to search successfully you must use a variety of words that relate to your topic

  • Think of the different words and phrases that people use when they discuss your topic.

  • Consider broader and narrower words, and synonyms (words that have the same meaning).

  • Identify search words through your background research or ask a librarian for help in finding words that are used in your field of research.

 Before you jump into searching a database, it's important to get your search terms ready. Databases employ powerful search engines to help users find the most relevant information they can.  "Powerful" means that you as the user have a lot of control over what information the search engine looks for and how it looks for that information - it also means that using a database search engine requires some practice and preparation...
