Searching JSTOR for Images

Search Steps

• Start by going to JSTOR.
• (OPTIONAL) In the upper right corner, click Log in (or Register if you've not yet done so). Registering for an account will allow you to save images to folders as you search, but it is not required.
• Next click on Advanced Search above the search box.
• Under Advanced Search click on Images.
• Enter your search terms in the boxes under Construct your search query. (You can also limit your search to the Title or Creator field by using the drop-down menu, or you can keep the default setting and search All Fields.) 
• (OPTIONAL) you may also want to specify a date range, classification (medium), or country by using the Date, Classification, or Country filters. (NOTE: the more filters you use, the fewer results you will get.)
• Click Submit Advanced Search.
• Once you've found an image of interest, click on it to enlarge it.
• Click Download to download the image. 

Citing Images 

Images must be cited like all other resources! If you use an image you did not create, you must provide a citation. The citation should be accessible in the context of the image's use (within a PowerPoint presentation, on a Web page, in a paper, etc.).

To cite ARTstor images, click on the information (i) icon below the image to find the artist's name, title of artwork, date of creation, and repository.

In this class you are to use Chicago style citations. In Chicago style, images can be cited using captions or using footnotes/endnotes with a corresponding bibliography entry. Check with your instructor for her preference.
