ENGL 102: Endicott, S. (Winter 2025): Searching the open web and local agencies

The open web

The open web is a great place to look for Open Access journal articles about participatory action research and related ideas, and to look for agencies and organizations that focus on PAR, or are good candidates for getting funding for a PAR project.

Searching the open web with domain searching

Doing a domain search with an open web search engine is a great way to narrow down your open web results to non-profit organizations; educational institutions; and government agencies.

Websites' domain endings mean something.

  • .com = a commercial site, one way of the other, their site makes money either directly from us, or from advertisers. Dot com sites are not recommended for this project.
  • .edu = recognized educational institutions, K-12, and colleges and their research programs
  • .gov = US government agencies, county, state, and federal. A great place to look for social programs, social issues, public health information, and legislation and more.
  • .org - while .edu and .gov must be recognizes education and government agencies, any one can claim a .org domain. Make sure that the .org site you might want to use is legitimate. You can ask a Librarian for help if it isn't clear. You can even email me for help with this, or any research help.

google domain search, searching "participatory action research" with site colon dot edu to find only educational institutions

Local socially focused organizations

The above is a partial list from just one general search:

google search box showing "tacoma social justice organization"

You can also narrow or search more specifically:
