Finding Original (or "Scientific") Research Articles

Learn how to recognize an original research article and where to find one.

Searching for Original, Scientific Articles

The library's databases allow you to narrow down your options to research articles (also sometimes listed as "scholarly" and/or "peer reviewed" in databases) -- or choose a database that ONLY includes research articles. In the box below are a few good starting options, but you can also see all of the TCC library research databases via the link below.

Popular research databases

Popular Research Databases

EbscoHost

The Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, and PsycARTICLES databases (all published by EbscoHost) include many original research articles. (The direct links to these databases are at the bottom of this box.)

Search Tips

Search for Terms inside the Abstract

Use keywords to search your topic, placing one term in each box. Then use the drop down menu to choose the ABSTRACT search field for all boxes.

  • The image below shows the search for: Diabetes AND (results OR methods)
  • And it uses the additional "abstract" field limiter on the right

Limit to Academic Journals

On the advanced search page you can limit by source type, or you can use the filters on the following page, once you see a list of results. The image below shows those three filters: for Full-Text (meaning the entire article is available now), to Peer-Reviewed, and under "Source Types" limit to Academic Journals.

Three filters are highlighted in the search, to limit by source type and peer review, and full-text

You will still need to examine the individual articles looking for the characteristics listed under the "Definition and description" tab on this guide to be sure of finding the right kind of article.

Popular Research Databases

ProQuest

The ProQuest databases also include scientific research articles. There is a larger number and mix of article types in ProQuest, so you may need to look through a larger number of articles to find what you need.

Search Tips

Limit For Terms in the Abstract

Click on ADVANCED SEARCH, then enter your search terms in one or two search boxes and results OR  methods in the second or third box. In the field at the end, change to Abstract. .

  • The search in the image below shows this, a search for the words Diabetes AND (results OR methods)
  • And changing the field at the end of the search to Abstract tells the search to show results for articles that have these words written within the article's abstract.

Limit your results to scholarly journals

Quite a bit further down the advanced search screen (shown above) you can limit the search to scholarly articles, peer reviewed, and full-text. However, the same filters are much more easily accessed on the following page, once you enter your search terms and see a list of results. The image below shows this side menu of filters, with those three featured.

As you look through your results, you will need to examine the characteristics of the individual articles to make certain they are what you need.

Popular Databases

ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect is a database that only includes scholarly, scientific articles; It's a great place to try searches on a variety of contents.

Search Tips

Limit Terms to the Abstract

By clicking on the "Advanced Search" option, you will be given more filters to help your search. By using the filter shown in the image below for "Title, abstract or author-specified keywords," you can limit your search to articles where that specific keyword appears inside the abstract.

Similarly, you can limit to "research articles" by using the filters that appear on the left-side of the screen (after you've entered your search terms & see a list of results)
