The purpose of this guide is to provide information on the Indigenous languages spoken in Washington State, as well as to help support the preservation and revitalization of these languages.

The Makah language belongs to the Southern Nootkan branch of the Wakashan language family. There are no longer any fluent, native speakers of this language, but some members of the Makah tribe on the Olympic Peninsula still speak it as a secondary language ( text cited below).
