Art research guide: Images

This library guide provides students with starting points for doing art-related research and provides some specific guidance for completing the Art 100 era/movement project.

NOTICE ABOUT ARTSTOR

Please note that the Artstor database is merging with JSTOR. All content in Artstor has been imported to JSTOR, so you can use either database to find images at this time.

The Artstor platform will remain active until August 1, 2024, at which time, all Artstor content will only be available via JSTOR. The same functionality that you have become accustomed to on Artstor will still be available on the JSTOR platform.

ARTstor

  • Start by going to Artstor.
  • In the upper right corner, click Log in (or Register if you've not yet done so). Registering for an account will allow you to download images to use in your assignments and presentations.
  • Next click on Advanced Search under the Search Artstor box.
  • Enter your search terms in the boxes under Search for words or phrases. (You can also limit your search to the Title or Creator field by using the drop-down menu, or you can keep the default setting and search in any field.)
  • (Optional) you may also want to specify a date range, geographic location, or classification (medium) by using the DateGeography, or Classification filters. (NOTE: the more filters you use, the fewer results you will get.)
  • Once you've found an image of interest, click on it to enlarge it.
  • Click DOWNLOAD to download the image.

Citing images

Images must be cited like all other resources! If you use an image you did not create, you must provide a citation. The citation should be accessible in the context of the image's use (within a PowerPoint presentation, on a Web page, in a paper, etc.).

See the MLA citations tab of this guide for guidance.
