Formatting an Academic Paper in Microsoft Word: Home

Introduction

Formatting an Academic Paper in Microsoft Word

This research guide is designed to show you how to format an academic paper using Microsoft Word. Unlike other documents, academic papers usually follow the formatting rules set forth in academic style guides (e.g. MLA, APA or Turabian). This guide is a summary of some of the more common formatting tasks that new college students are often unfamiliar with. Specifically, the guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to set page margins, how to create a running header, how to create a title page, and how to create a references or works cited page.
