Search Google More Effectively

Limiting the Domain in Google Searches

Government websites (.gov)

Government sites (at the federal, state, and county level) can provide statistics and reliable information about some topics. 

Limit your search to only government websites by using "site:gov" as part of your search string. (Note that there is no space before or after the colon.)

Here's is an example of what you would type into a Google search bar:

homeless programs tacoma site:.gov

Note: This search uses keywords to find info about local or county government programs to help homeless populations in Tacoma, Washington.

Organization websites (.org)

Organizations can be for-profit or non-profit -- you would need to check their "About" page to see which kind -- but websites for organizations can be super useful when looking for problem-solving solutions and how other people or organizations have gone about trying to help a specific social issue or problem.

Here is a sample Google search if you want to narrow down to organizations:

homeless programs tacoma site:.org

Note: This search uses keywords to find local or regional organizations providing services for the homeless in Tacoma

Educational websites (.edu)

Some universities have research centers, and make their research or programs available online.

Here is a sample Google search if you want to narrow down to educational sources:

homeless programs tacoma site:.edu

Note: This search uses keywords to search for local or regional colleges & university info or programs about homelessness in Tacoma

Evaluating Sources

A good (reliable, useful, valid) information source:

1. clearly identifies the author and that the author's education, training or experience relate to the subject;
2. clearly states the date the material was written and/or last revised;
3. provides accurate data;
4. keeps bias to a minimum and/or clearly indicates point of view;   
5. provides the type and level of information you need.
